The "K" refers to the sort of drivetrain that these versions used, Kardanantrieb, meaning enclosed driveshaft using two universal joints. Zündapp introduced the enclosed crankcase (a novelty). While the KS600 was discontinued and in the end replaced by the purpose-built KS750, its motor was to get the only remnant to call home beyond the destruction involving war. When Zündapp returned to motorcycle production inside late 1940s, it chose to reuse the KS600's motor to help power the KS601 having few modifications. The Zündapp K800 got unit construction, flat-four engines with base drive (a layout adopted by Honda for your Gold Wing in 1974) and were the one 4-cylinder machines used with the German armed forces throughout WWII.

By 1931 Ferdinand Porsche along with Zündapp developed the prototype Automotive für Jedermann ("car regarding everyone"), which was the new the name Volkswagen seemed to be used. Porsche preferred the 4-cylinder toned engine, but Zündapp used the water-cooled 5-cylinder radial motor. In 1932 three prototypes had been running.
