Zündapp was an essential German motorcycle manufacturer founded in 1917 in Nuremberg by means of Fritz Neumeyer, together with the Friedrich Krupp AG as well as the machine tool manufacturer Thiel beneath the name "Zünder- und Apparatebau G. m. b. H. " as a developer of detonators (Zünder- und Apparatebau is actually German for Igniter along with Apparatus). In 1919, as the demand intended for weapons parts declined right after WWI, Neumeyer became the sole proprietor on the company, and two years later he diversified into the construction of motorcycles.Following WWII, Zündapp expanded into this microcar, moped and Scooter (street bike) markets. The company collapsed inside 1984.Zuendap. biz markets markets bike and electric bicycles while using the Zundapp name and logo. while Zuendapp.com markets "enduro-sport" motorcycles under the Zundapp brand.

The first Zündapp motorcycle was the actual model Z22 in 1921. This was the Motorrad für Jedermann ("motorcycle pertaining to everyone"), a simple, reliable design that was manufactured in large series. Zündapp's history of large motorcycles began in 1933 with the K-series. The "K" refers to the type of drivetrain that these designs used, Kardanantrieb, meaning enclosed driveshaft using two universal joints. Zündapp introduced the enclosed crankcase (then a novelty). The series encompassed versions from 200 to 900 cc displacement and was an important success, increasing Zündapp's market discuss in Germany from 5% with 1931 to 18% within 1937.The Zündapp KS600, first released in 1938, had a 28 h . p . (21 kW) flat in a trench opposed twin cylinder electric motor with overhead valves displacing 597 closed circuit (36. 4 cu in). The KS600 was often in addition to a Steib sidecar, the BW38 (Beiwagen 1938). The BW38, fitted with the B1 (Boot no. 1) sidecar human body was produced between 1938 as well as 1941 and supplied exclusively on the Wehrmacht. While the KS600 was discontinued and in the end replaced by the purpose-built KS750, its motor was to be the only remnant to live on beyond the destruction associated with war. When Zündapp returned to motorcycle production within the late 1940s, it chose to reuse the KS600's motor to help power the KS601 together with few modifications. The Zündapp K800 acquired unit construction, flat-four engines with canal drive (a layout adopted by Honda for the Gold Wing in 1974) and were the only 4-cylinder machines used through the German armed forces in WWII.

Coming from 1931 Ferdinand Porsche and Zündapp developed the prototype Automobile für Jedermann ("car pertaining to everyone"), which was the very first time that the name Volkswagen seemed to be used. Porsche preferred the 4-cylinder flat engine, but Zündapp used a water-cooled 5-cylinder radial powerplant. In 1932 three prototypes ended up running. All three cars were lost through the war, the last in the 1945 Stuttgart bombing raid. From 1936 to 1938 Zündapp created the KKS500 model. This was the first Zündapp having a foot gear change, and 170 examples have been built. From 1940 onward Zündapp produced more than 18, 000 units of the Zündapp KS 750. This is a sidecar outfit with a driven side wheel as well as a locking differential, supplied to the The german language Wehrmacht.Zündapp also made aircraft engines such as 9-092, which was used in light aircraft, including the Brunswick LF-1 Zaunkönig (1942) ab initio trainer aircraft.

After WWII this company transitioned to smaller machines, notably the "Bella" powerplant scooter, which was a relatively heavy machine for its type. In 1951 Zündapp released the last of its heavy motorcycle models, but one of its most famous: the KS601 (the actual "green elephant") which has a 598 cc two-cylinder engine. From 1957 to 1958 the corporation also produced the Zündapp Janus microcar. In 1958 the firm moved from Nuremberg to help Munich. Subsequently, the company developed several new smaller models, discontinued the development of four-stroke engines in support of produced two-stroke models. Zündapp experienced some achievement in motorsports with riders André Malherbe winning this 125cc European motocross competition in 1973 and once more in 1974. Initially, Zündapp scooters and mopeds sold well, but later sales declined and in 1984 the corporation went bankrupt and finished.

Following bankruptcy, the entire production line and intellectual properties has been bought by Xunda Powerplant Co., Tianjin, China. They produced small Zündapp motorbikes from 1987 till their early 1990s. Zündapp is still operational, but makes Honda dependent 4-stroke motorcycles and electric mopeds.Zündapp also had some sort of technical collaboration with Regal Enfield (India) to build mopeds and motorcycles. A dedicated factory seemed to be built at Ranipet near Chennai from the early 1980s to create small, lightweight two-stroke motorcycles to be offered with their flagship Royal Enfield Topic. Enfield launched two 50 closed circuit motorcycles first, the step-thru Silver Plus plus the 3-speed Explorer motorcycle. Later, 175 cc Enfield Fury (depending on Zündapp KS175) was introduced as being a performance motorcycle. It had 5-speed gearbox, a hydraulic Brembo disc brake plus a sleeveless hard chromed canister barrel, all were a first using a motorcycle in that state.
