Zündapp was an essential German motorcycle manufacturer launched in 1917 in Nuremberg by Fritz Neumeyer, together with the Friedrich Krupp AG as well as the machine tool manufacturer Thiel within the name "Zünder- und Apparatebau Gary the gadget guy. m. b. H. " as a manufacturer of detonators (Zünder- und Apparatebau can be German for Igniter and Apparatus). In 1919, as the demand with regard to weapons parts declined following WWI, Neumeyer became the sole proprietor of the company, and two years later he diversified to the construction of motorcycles.Following WWII, Zündapp expanded into the particular microcar, moped and Scooter (street bike) markets. The first Zündapp motorcycle was the model Z22 in 1921. This was the Motorrad für Jedermann ("motorcycle with regard to everyone"), a simple, reliable design that was stated in large series. Zündapp's history of major motorcycles began in 1933 while using the K-series. The "K" refers to any type of drivetrain that these models used, Kardanantrieb, meaning enclosed driveshaft with two universal joints. Zündapp introduced the enclosed crankcase (then the novelty). The series encompassed products from 200 to 900 cc displacement and was an important success, increasing Zündapp's market write about in Germany from 5% in 1931 to 18% inside 1937.The Zündapp KS600, first released in 1938, had a 28 hp . p . (21 kW) width wise opposed twin cylinder electric motor with overhead valves displacing 597 cc (36. 4 cu in). The KS600 was often along with a Steib sidecar, the BW38 (Beiwagen 1938). Via 1931 Ferdinand Porsche and Zündapp developed the prototype Automobile für Jedermann ("car intended for everyone"), which was the new the name Volkswagen had been used. Porsche preferred the 4-cylinder level engine, but Zündapp used a water-cooled 5-cylinder radial powerplant. In 1932 three prototypes have been running. All three cars were lost during the war, the last in a 1945 Stuttgart bombing raid.From 1936 to 1938 Zündapp generated the KKS500 model. This was the first Zündapp using a foot gear change, and 170 examples were being built. From 1940 onward Zündapp produced over 18, 000 units of this Zündapp KS 750. This is a sidecar outfit which has a driven side wheel plus a locking differential, supplied to the A language like german Wehrmacht.Zündapp also made aircraft engines such as 9-092, which was used within light aircraft, including the Brunswick LF-1 Zaunkönig (1942) ab initio trainer aircraft.

After WWII the business transitioned to smaller products, notably the "Bella" generator scooter, which was a relatively heavy machine to its type. In 1951 Zündapp released the final of its heavy street motorcycle models, but one of its most famous: the KS601 (the actual "green elephant") using a 598 cc two-cylinder powerplant. From 1957 to 1958 the corporation also produced the Zündapp Janus microcar.In 1958 the organization moved from Nuremberg to help Munich. Subsequently, the company developed various new smaller models, discontinued the development of four-stroke engines and only produced two-stroke models. Zündapp experienced some good results in motorsports with rider André Malherbe winning the particular 125cc European motocross titles in 1973 and all over again in 1974. Initially, Zündapp scooters and mopeds marketed well, but later sales dropped and in 1984 the business went bankrupt and shut.

As soon as the bankruptcy, the entire production collection and intellectual properties has been bought by Xunda Powerplant Co., Tianjin, China. They produced small Zündapp motorbikes from 1987 till their early 1990s. Zündapp is still in operation, but makes Honda based 4-stroke motorcycles and electrical mopeds.Zündapp also had the technical collaboration with Royal Enfield (India) to create mopeds and motorcycles. A dedicated factory seemed to be built at Ranipet near Chennai within the early 1980s to produce small, lightweight two-stroke motorcycles to be offered along with their flagship Royal Enfield Bullet. Enfield launched two 50 cc motorcycles first, the step-thru Silver Plus along with the 3-speed Explorer motorcycle. Later, 175 cc Enfield Fury (dependant on Zündapp KS175) was introduced as a performance motorcycle. It had 5-speed gearbox, a hydraulic Brembo disc brake and a sleeveless hard chromed cylinder barrel, all were a first on the motorcycle in that land.
