Zündapp was a serious German motorcycle manufacturer set up in 1917 in Nuremberg by Fritz Neumeyer, together with the Friedrich Krupp AG and the machine tool manufacturer Thiel within the name "Zünder- und Apparatebau Gary. m. b. H. " as a producer of detonators (Zünder- und Apparatebau is usually German for Igniter in addition to Apparatus). In 1919, as the demand pertaining to weapons parts declined following WWI, Neumeyer became the sole proprietor in the company, and two years later he diversified in the construction of motorcycles.Following WWII, Zündapp expanded into the microcar, moped and Scooter (motorbike) markets. The 1st Zündapp motorcycle was the actual model Z22 in 1921. This was the Motorrad für Jedermann ("motorcycle regarding everyone"), a simple, reliable design that was produced in large series. Zündapp's history of major motorcycles began in 1933 with all the K-series. The "K" refers to the kind of drivetrain that these designs used, Kardanantrieb, meaning enclosed driveshaft along with two universal joints. Zündapp introduced the enclosed crankcase (then the novelty). The series encompassed products from 200 to 800 cc displacement and was a significant success, increasing Zündapp's market reveal in Germany from 5% inside 1931 to 18% in 1937.The Zündapp KS600, first released in 1938, had a 28 horsepower (21 kW) width wise opposed twin cylinder powerplant with overhead valves displacing 597 cc (36. 4 cu in). The KS600 was often along with a Steib sidecar, the BW38 (Beiwagen 1938). After WWII the organization transitioned to smaller machines, notably the "Bella" engine scooter, which was a relatively heavy machine for the type. In 1951 Zündapp released the final of its heavy bike models, but one of its most well-known: the KS601 (the actual "green elephant") using a 598 cc two-cylinder powerplant. From 1957 to 1958 this company also produced the Zündapp Janus microcar.In 1958 the firm moved from Nuremberg to help Munich. Subsequently, the company developed many new smaller models, discontinued the development of four-stroke engines and only produced two-stroke models. Zündapp experienced some achievement in motorsports with driver André Malherbe winning the 125cc European motocross titles in 1973 and once more in 1974. Initially, Zündapp scooters and mopeds available well, but later sales diminished and in 1984 the organization went bankrupt and shut down.

Following your bankruptcy, the entire production range and intellectual properties has been bought by Xunda Engine Co., Tianjin, China. They produced small Zündapp motorcycles from 1987 till early 1990s. Zündapp is still in operation, but makes Honda based 4-stroke motorcycles and electric powered mopeds.Zündapp also had some sort of technical collaboration with Royal Enfield (India) to construct mopeds and motorcycles. A dedicated factory had been built at Ranipet near Chennai inside early 1980s to manufacture small, lightweight two-stroke motorcycles to be offered with their flagship Royal Enfield Bullet. Enfield launched two 50 cc motorcycles first, the step-thru Silver Plus as well as the 3-speed Explorer motorcycle. Later, 175 cc Enfield Fury (dependant on Zündapp KS175) was introduced as a performance motorcycle. It had 5-speed gearbox, a hydraulic Brembo disc brake plus a sleeveless hard chromed tube barrel, all were a first over a motorcycle in that region.
