Zündapp was an important German motorcycle manufacturer launched in 1917 in Nuremberg by Fritz Neumeyer, together with the Friedrich Krupp AG as well as the machine tool manufacturer Thiel underneath the name "Zünder- und Apparatebau Gary the gadget guy. m. b. H. " as a developer of detonators (Zünder- und Apparatebau is German for Igniter in addition to Apparatus). The very first Zündapp motorcycle was this model Z22 in 1921. This was the Motorrad für Jedermann ("motorcycle intended for everyone"), a simple, reliable design that was stated in large series. Zündapp's history of weighty motorcycles began in 1933 using the K-series. The "K" refers to the kind of drivetrain that these versions used, Kardanantrieb, meaning enclosed driveshaft using two universal joints. Zündapp introduced the enclosed crankcase (then a novelty). The series encompassed products from 200 to 300 cc displacement and was a serious success, increasing Zündapp's market reveal in Germany from 5% with 1931 to 18% inside 1937.The Zündapp KS600, first released in 1938, had a 28 hp . p . By 1931 Ferdinand Porsche and Zündapp developed the prototype Car für Jedermann ("car pertaining to everyone"), which was the very first time that the name Volkswagen was used. Porsche preferred the 4-cylinder ripped engine, but Zündapp used a new water-cooled 5-cylinder radial serps. In 1932 three prototypes were running. All three cars were lost through the war, the last in the 1945 Stuttgart bombing raid.From 1936 to 1938 Zündapp developed the KKS500 model. This was the first Zündapp using a foot gear change, and 170 examples ended up built. From 1940 onward Zündapp produced over 18, 000 units of the Zündapp KS 750. This is a sidecar outfit using a driven side wheel as well as a locking differential, supplied to the German born Wehrmacht.Zündapp also made aircraft engines like the 9-092, which was used with light aircraft, including the Brunswick LF-1 Zaunkönig (1942) belly initio trainer aircraft.

After WWII the organization transitioned to smaller machines, notably the "Bella" electric motor scooter, which was a relatively heavy machine for the type. In 1951 Zündapp released the final of its heavy bike models, but one of its most well-known: the KS601 (the "green elephant") having a 598 cc two-cylinder serps. After the bankruptcy, the entire production series and intellectual properties seemed to be bought by Xunda Engine Co., Tianjin, China. They produced small Zündapp motorbikes from 1987 till the first 1990s. Zündapp is still in business, but makes Honda structured 4-stroke motorcycles and electric powered mopeds.Zündapp also had a new technical collaboration with Royal Enfield (India) to build mopeds and motorcycles. A dedicated factory ended up being built at Ranipet near Chennai inside early 1980s to manufacture small, lightweight two-stroke motorcycles to be offered along with their flagship Royal Enfield Topic. Enfield launched two 50 cc motorcycles first, the step-thru Silver Plus and the 3-speed Explorer motorcycle.
