Zündapp was a serious German motorcycle manufacturer launched in 1917 in Nuremberg by means of Fritz Neumeyer, together with the Friedrich Krupp AG as well as the machine tool manufacturer Thiel beneath name "Zünder- und Apparatebau Gary. m. b. H. " as a developer of detonators (Zünder- und Apparatebau will be German for Igniter along with Apparatus). The 1st Zündapp motorcycle was the model Z22 in 1921. This was the Motorrad für Jedermann ("motorcycle for everyone"), a simple, reliable design that was produced in large series. Zündapp's history of hefty motorcycles began in 1933 while using the K-series. The "K" refers to any type of drivetrain that these versions used, Kardanantrieb, meaning enclosed driveshaft together with two universal joints. Zündapp introduced the enclosed crankcase (then a novelty). The series encompassed models from 200 to eight hundred cc displacement and was a major success, increasing Zündapp's market write about in Germany from 5% with 1931 to 18% in 1937.The Zündapp KS600, first released in 1938, had a 28 horsepower (21 kW) flat opposed twin cylinder motor with overhead valves displacing 597 closed circuit (36. 4 cu in). Coming from 1931 Ferdinand Porsche and Zündapp developed the prototype Automobile für Jedermann ("car pertaining to everyone"), which was the very first time the name Volkswagen has been used. Porsche preferred the 4-cylinder flat engine, but Zündapp used a water-cooled 5-cylinder radial serp. In 1932 three prototypes had been running. After WWII the company transitioned to smaller products, notably the "Bella" electric motor scooter, which was a relatively heavy machine due to the type. In 1951 Zündapp released the final of its heavy motorcycle models, but one of its most famous: the KS601 (the "green elephant") using a 598 cc two-cylinder motor. They produced small Zündapp motorcycles from 1987 till the early 1990s. Zündapp is still operating, but makes Honda dependent 4-stroke motorcycles and electric mopeds.Zündapp also had some sort of technical collaboration with Noble Enfield (India) to create mopeds and motorcycles. A dedicated factory seemed to be built at Ranipet near Chennai within the early 1980s to manufacture small, lightweight two-stroke motorcycles to be offered with their flagship Royal Enfield Bullet. Enfield launched two 50 closed circuit motorcycles first, the step-thru Silver Plus plus the 3-speed Explorer motorcycle. Later, 175 cc Enfield Fury (according to Zündapp KS175) was introduced to be a performance motorcycle. It had 5-speed gearbox, a hydraulic Brembo disc brake as well as a sleeveless hard chromed tube barrel, all were a first using a motorcycle in that region.
