Zündapp was a serious German motorcycle manufacturer founded in 1917 in Nuremberg by Fritz Neumeyer, together with the Friedrich Krupp AG as well as the machine tool manufacturer Thiel within the name "Zünder- und Apparatebau G. m. b. H. " as a producer of detonators (Zünder- und Apparatebau will be German for Igniter and also Apparatus). The 1st Zündapp motorcycle was this model Z22 in 1921. This was the Motorrad für Jedermann ("motorcycle for everyone"), a simple, reliable design that was manufactured in large series. Zündapp's history of large motorcycles began in 1933 while using the K-series. The "K" refers to the sort of drivetrain that these designs used, Kardanantrieb, meaning enclosed driveshaft having two universal joints. Zündapp introduced the enclosed crankcase (then the novelty). The series encompassed types from 200 to 900 cc displacement and was an essential success, increasing Zündapp's market share in Germany from 5% with 1931 to 18% throughout 1937.The Zündapp KS600, first released in 1938, had a 28 hp . p . (21 kW) flat in a trench opposed twin cylinder generator with overhead valves displacing 597 closed circuit (36. 4 cu in). The KS600 was often in conjunction with a Steib sidecar, the BW38 (Beiwagen 1938). The BW38, fitted with the B1 (Start no. 1) sidecar physique was produced between 1938 along with 1941 and supplied exclusively towards the Wehrmacht. While the KS600 was discontinued and finally replaced by the purpose-built KS750, its motor was to be the only remnant to live on beyond the destruction connected with war. When Zündapp returned to motorcycle production inside late 1940s, it chose to recycle the KS600's motor in order to power the KS601 along with few modifications.The Zündapp K800 got unit construction, flat-four engines with the whole length drive (a design adopted by Honda to the Gold Wing in 1974) and were the one 4-cylinder machines used with the German armed forces in WWII.

By 1931 Ferdinand Porsche as well as Zündapp developed the prototype Automotive für Jedermann ("car with regard to everyone"), which was the first-time the name Volkswagen was used. Porsche preferred the 4-cylinder toned engine, but Zündapp used the water-cooled 5-cylinder radial motor. In 1932 three prototypes were running. All three cars were lost over the war, the last in the 1945 Stuttgart bombing raid.From 1936 to 1938 Zündapp generated the KKS500 model. This was the first Zündapp having a foot gear change, and 170 examples ended up built. From 1940 onward Zündapp produced more than 18, 000 units of this Zündapp KS 750. This is a sidecar outfit having a driven side wheel as well as a locking differential, supplied to the German born Wehrmacht.Zündapp also made aircraft engines such as 9-092, which was used with light aircraft, including the Brunswick LF-1 Zaunkönig (1942) stomach initio trainer aircraft.

After WWII the corporation transitioned to smaller equipment, notably the "Bella" electric motor scooter, which was a relatively heavy machine due to the type. In 1951 Zündapp released the past of its heavy street motorcycle models, but one of its most well-known: the KS601 (the particular "green elephant") which has a 598 cc two-cylinder engine. From 1957 to 1958 the company also produced the Zündapp Janus microcar.In 1958 the firm moved from Nuremberg to be able to Munich. Subsequently, the company developed numerous new smaller models, discontinued the development of four-stroke engines and only produced two-stroke models. Zündapp experienced some good results in motorsports with biker André Malherbe winning this 125cc European motocross competition in 1973 and yet again in 1974. Initially, Zündapp scooters and mopeds marketed well, but later sales decreased and in 1984 the corporation went bankrupt and shut.

Following bankruptcy, the entire production brand and intellectual properties had been bought by Xunda Powerplant Co., Tianjin, China. They produced small Zündapp bikes from 1987 till early 1990s. Zündapp is still operational, but makes Honda centered 4-stroke motorcycles and electric mopeds.Zündapp also had a technical collaboration with Noble Enfield (India) to create mopeds and motorcycles. A dedicated factory had been built at Ranipet near Chennai from the early 1980s to manufacture small, lightweight two-stroke motorcycles to be offered along with their flagship Royal Enfield Round. Enfield launched two 50 closed circuit motorcycles first, the step-thru Silver Plus and also the 3-speed Explorer motorcycle. Later, 175 cc Enfield Fury (determined by Zündapp KS175) was introduced to be a performance motorcycle. It had 5-speed gearbox, a hydraulic Brembo disc brake and a sleeveless hard chromed storage container barrel, all were a first on the motorcycle in that land.
