The "K" refers to any type of drivetrain that these versions used, Kardanantrieb, meaning enclosed driveshaft having two universal joints. Zündapp introduced the enclosed crankcase (a novelty). The series encompassed models from 200 to 300 cc displacement and was a major success, increasing Zündapp's market write about in Germany from 5% throughout 1931 to 18% in 1937.The Zündapp KS600, first released in 1938, had a 28 hp (21 kW) horizontally opposed twin cylinder powerplant with overhead valves displacing 597 closed circuit (36. 4 cu in). While the KS600 was discontinued and eventually replaced by the purpose-built KS750, its motor was being the only remnant to live beyond the destruction connected with war. When Zündapp returned to motorcycle production inside late 1940s, it chose to recycle the KS600's motor to power the KS601 using few modifications. The Zündapp K800 got unit construction, flat-four engines with shaft drive (a design adopted by Honda with the Gold Wing in 1974) and were the sole 4-cylinder machines used because of the German armed forces with WWII.
From 1931 Ferdinand Porsche and also Zündapp developed the prototype Vehicle für Jedermann ("car intended for everyone"), which was the first time the name Volkswagen had been used. Porsche preferred the 4-cylinder ripped engine, but Zündapp used some sort of water-cooled 5-cylinder radial serp. In 1932 three prototypes have been running. All three cars were lost over the war, the last in a 1945 Stuttgart bombing raid. From 1936 to 1938 Zündapp produced the KKS500 model. After WWII the organization transitioned to smaller devices, notably the "Bella" engine scooter, which was a relatively heavy machine to its type. In 1951 Zündapp released the final of its heavy street motorcycle models, but one of its most famous: the KS601 (the actual "green elephant") which has a 598 cc two-cylinder serps. Initially, Zündapp scooters and mopeds offered well, but later sales decreased and in 1984 the organization went bankrupt and closed.
Following bankruptcy, the entire production brand and intellectual properties had been bought by Xunda Generator Co., Tianjin, China. They produced small Zündapp motorbikes from 1987 till earlier 1990s. Zündapp is still operational, but makes Honda based 4-stroke motorcycles and electrical mopeds.Zündapp also had a new technical collaboration with Noble Enfield (India) to make mopeds and motorcycles. A dedicated factory seemed to be built at Ranipet near Chennai within the early 1980s to make small, lightweight two-stroke motorcycles to be offered along with their flagship Royal Enfield Topic. Enfield launched two 50 cc motorcycles first, the step-thru Silver Plus plus the 3-speed Explorer motorcycle. Later, 175 cc Enfield Fury (according to Zündapp KS175) was introduced like a performance motorcycle. It had 5-speed gearbox, a hydraulic Brembo disc brake along with a sleeveless hard chromed cyndrical tube barrel, all were a first using a motorcycle in that state.
