Zündapp was a major German motorcycle manufacturer set up in 1917 in Nuremberg by Fritz Neumeyer, together with the Friedrich Krupp AG as well as the machine tool manufacturer Thiel under the name "Zünder- und Apparatebau H. m. b. H. " as a developer of detonators (Zünder- und Apparatebau is usually German for Igniter as well as Apparatus). The primary Zündapp motorcycle was the actual model Z22 in 1921. This was the Motorrad für Jedermann ("motorcycle pertaining to everyone"), a simple, reliable design that was produced in large series. Zündapp's history of hefty motorcycles began in 1933 using the K-series. The "K" refers to the drivetrain that these products used, Kardanantrieb, meaning enclosed driveshaft along with two universal joints. Zündapp introduced the enclosed crankcase (a novelty). The series encompassed versions from 200 to 300 cc displacement and was a significant success, increasing Zündapp's market share in Germany from 5% in 1931 to 18% throughout 1937.The Zündapp KS600, first released in 1938, had a 28 h . p . (21 kW) width wise opposed twin cylinder generator with overhead valves displacing 597 closed circuit (36. 4 cu in). The KS600 was often along with a Steib sidecar, the BW38 (Beiwagen 1938). The BW38, fitted with the B1 (Shoe no. 1) sidecar entire body was produced between 1938 as well as 1941 and supplied exclusively for the Wehrmacht. While the KS600 was discontinued and in the end replaced by the purpose-built KS750, its motor was to become the only remnant to reside in beyond the destruction associated with war. When Zündapp returned to motorcycle production from the late 1940s, it chose to recycling the KS600's motor in order to power the KS601 along with few modifications.The Zündapp K800 had unit construction, flat-four engines with base drive (a structure adopted by Honda for your Gold Wing in 1974) and were really the only 4-cylinder machines used from the German armed forces inside WWII.

After WWII the company transitioned to smaller products, notably the "Bella" engine scooter, which was a relatively heavy machine for its type. In 1951 Zündapp released one more of its heavy street motorcycle models, but one of its most well-known: the KS601 (the actual "green elephant") using a 598 cc two-cylinder serp. From 1957 to 1958 the business also produced the Zündapp Janus microcar.In 1958 the organization moved from Nuremberg to help Munich. Subsequently, the company developed numerous new smaller models, discontinued the development of four-stroke engines and only produced two-stroke models. Zündapp experienced some accomplishment in motorsports with driver André Malherbe winning your 125cc European motocross titles in 1973 and once more in 1974. Initially, Zündapp scooters and mopeds sold well, but later sales diminished and in 1984 the business went bankrupt and shut down.

After the bankruptcy, the entire production brand and intellectual properties has been bought by Xunda Powerplant Co., Tianjin, China. They produced small Zündapp cycles from 1987 till early 1990s. Zündapp is still in business, but makes Honda centered 4-stroke motorcycles and power mopeds.Zündapp also had some sort of technical collaboration with Royal Enfield (India) to construct mopeds and motorcycles. A dedicated factory has been built at Ranipet near Chennai within the early 1980s to production small, lightweight two-stroke motorcycles to be offered along with their flagship Royal Enfield Bullet. Enfield launched two 50 cc motorcycles first, the step-thru Silver Plus plus the 3-speed Explorer motorcycle. Later, 175 cc Enfield Fury (according to Zündapp KS175) was introduced being a performance motorcycle. It had 5-speed gearbox, a hydraulic Brembo disc brake along with a sleeveless hard chromed storage container barrel, all were a first over a motorcycle in that region.
