Zündapp was a major German motorcycle manufacturer founded in 1917 in Nuremberg by simply Fritz Neumeyer, together with the Friedrich Krupp AG plus the machine tool manufacturer Thiel underneath the name "Zünder- und Apparatebau Gary the gadget guy. m. b. H. " as a maker of detonators (Zünder- und Apparatebau is usually German for Igniter along with Apparatus). In 1919, as the demand for weapons parts declined after WWI, Neumeyer became the sole proprietor from the company, and two years later he diversified in the construction of motorcycles.Following WWII, Zündapp expanded into the microcar, moped and Scooter (motorcycle) markets. The primary Zündapp motorcycle was the particular model Z22 in 1921. By 1931 Ferdinand Porsche as well as Zündapp developed the prototype Vehicle für Jedermann ("car pertaining to everyone"), which was the very first time that the name Volkswagen seemed to be used. After WWII the corporation transitioned to smaller products, notably the "Bella" electric motor scooter, which was a relatively heavy machine for the type. In 1951 Zündapp released the last of its heavy motorcycle models, but one of its most well-known: the KS601 (the actual "green elephant") with a 598 cc two-cylinder serp. From 1957 to 1958 this company also produced the Zündapp Janus microcar.In 1958 the business moved from Nuremberg to help Munich. Subsequently, the company developed a number of new smaller models, discontinued the development of four-stroke engines in support of produced two-stroke models. Zündapp experienced some good results in motorsports with rider André Malherbe winning this 125cc European motocross championships in 1973 and once again in 1974. Initially, Zündapp scooters and mopeds distributed well, but later sales declined and in 1984 the business went bankrupt and finished.
Following bankruptcy, the entire production line and intellectual properties had been bought by Xunda Generator Co., Tianjin, China. They produced small Zündapp cycles from 1987 till earlier 1990s. Zündapp is still operating, but makes Honda structured 4-stroke motorcycles and electric mopeds.Zündapp also had a technical collaboration with Noble Enfield (India) to make mopeds and motorcycles. A dedicated factory has been built at Ranipet near Chennai from the early 1980s to make small, lightweight two-stroke motorcycles to be offered along with their flagship Royal Enfield Topic. Enfield launched two 50 closed circuit motorcycles first, the step-thru Silver Plus plus the 3-speed Explorer motorcycle. Later, 175 cc Enfield Fury (determined by Zündapp KS175) was introduced as a performance motorcycle. It had 5-speed gearbox, a hydraulic Brembo disc brake plus a sleeveless hard chromed cylinder barrel, all were a first with a motorcycle in that country.
