Zündapp was an important German motorcycle manufacturer set up in 1917 in Nuremberg by Fritz Neumeyer, together with the Friedrich Krupp AG plus the machine tool manufacturer Thiel beneath name "Zünder- und Apparatebau H. m. b. H. " as a developer of detonators (Zünder- und Apparatebau will be German for Igniter along with Apparatus). In 1919, as the demand for weapons parts declined soon after WWI, Neumeyer became the sole proprietor with the company, and two years later he diversified in the construction of motorcycles.Following WWII, Zündapp expanded into the particular microcar, moped and Scooter (street bike) markets. The first Zündapp motorcycle was the actual model Z22 in 1921. This was the Motorrad für Jedermann ("motorcycle pertaining to everyone"), a simple, reliable design that was stated in large series. Zündapp's history of hefty motorcycles began in 1933 using the K-series. The "K" refers to the drivetrain that these types used, Kardanantrieb, meaning enclosed driveshaft together with two universal joints. Zündapp introduced the enclosed crankcase (then a novelty). The series encompassed designs from 200 to 900 cc displacement and was an essential success, increasing Zündapp's market reveal in Germany from 5% within 1931 to 18% inside 1937.The Zündapp KS600, first released in 1938, had a 28 hp (21 kW) horizontally opposed twin cylinder generator with overhead valves displacing 597 cc (36. 4 cu in). Through 1931 Ferdinand Porsche and also Zündapp developed the prototype Automobile für Jedermann ("car pertaining to everyone"), which was the very first time the name Volkswagen seemed to be used. After WWII the corporation transitioned to smaller models, notably the "Bella" generator scooter, which was a relatively heavy machine due to the type. In 1951 Zündapp released a final of its heavy bike models, but one of its most well-known: the KS601 (this "green elephant") with a 598 cc two-cylinder serps. From 1957 to 1958 this company also produced the Zündapp Janus microcar.In 1958 the business moved from Nuremberg to Munich. Subsequently, the company developed various new smaller models, discontinued the development of four-stroke engines in support of produced two-stroke models. Zündapp experienced some success in motorsports with biker André Malherbe winning the actual 125cc European motocross championships in 1973 and again in 1974. Initially, Zündapp scooters and mopeds distributed well, but later sales diminished and in 1984 this company went bankrupt and shut.

Following bankruptcy, the entire production series and intellectual properties was bought by Xunda Motor Co., Tianjin, China. They produced small Zündapp cycles from 1987 till the early 1990s. Zündapp is still in business, but makes Honda centered 4-stroke motorcycles and electric powered mopeds.Zündapp also had any technical collaboration with Royal Enfield (India) to construct mopeds and motorcycles. A dedicated factory had been built at Ranipet near Chennai within the early 1980s to create small, lightweight two-stroke motorcycles to be offered with their flagship Royal Enfield Bullet. Enfield launched two 50 closed circuit motorcycles first, the step-thru Silver Plus along with the 3-speed Explorer motorcycle. Later, 175 cc Enfield Fury (dependant on Zündapp KS175) was introduced being a performance motorcycle. It had 5-speed gearbox, a hydraulic Brembo disc brake as well as a sleeveless hard chromed tube barrel, all were a first with a motorcycle in that region.
