The first Zündapp motorcycle was the actual model Z22 in 1921. This was the Motorrad für Jedermann ("motorcycle with regard to everyone"), a simple, reliable design that was manufactured in large series. Zündapp's history of hefty motorcycles began in 1933 with the K-series. The "K" refers to the type of drivetrain that these versions used, Kardanantrieb, meaning enclosed driveshaft with two universal joints. Zündapp introduced the enclosed crankcase (a novelty). The series encompassed designs from 200 to 300 cc displacement and was a serious success, increasing Zündapp's market reveal in Germany from 5% within 1931 to 18% within 1937.The Zündapp KS600, first released in 1938, had a 28 hp . p . (21 kW) flat in a trench opposed twin cylinder generator with overhead valves displacing 597 cc (36. 4 cu in). The KS600 was often along with a Steib sidecar, the BW38 (Beiwagen 1938). The BW38, fitted with the B1 (Shoe no. 1) sidecar entire body was produced between 1938 and also 1941 and supplied exclusively for the Wehrmacht. While the KS600 was discontinued and ultimately replaced by the purpose-built KS750, its motor was being the only remnant to reside beyond the destruction associated with war. When Zündapp returned to motorcycle production inside late 1940s, it chose to recycle the KS600's motor in order to power the KS601 together with few modifications. The Zündapp K800 had unit construction, flat-four engines with the whole length drive (a structure adopted by Honda for the Gold Wing in 1974) and were the only real 4-cylinder machines used because of the German armed forces within WWII.

From 1931 Ferdinand Porsche as well as Zündapp developed the prototype Vehicle für Jedermann ("car with regard to everyone"), which was the first-time the name Volkswagen has been used. Porsche preferred the 4-cylinder level engine, but Zündapp used any water-cooled 5-cylinder radial powerplant. In 1932 three prototypes had been running. All three cars were lost throughout the war, the last in a new 1945 Stuttgart bombing raid. From 1936 to 1938 Zündapp made the KKS500 model. This was the first Zündapp that has a foot gear change, and 170 examples ended up built. From 1940 onward Zündapp produced more than 18, 000 units of the actual Zündapp KS 750. This is a sidecar outfit which has a driven side wheel and a locking differential, supplied to the In german Wehrmacht.Zündapp also made aircraft engines like 9-092, which was used within light aircraft, including the Brunswick LF-1 Zaunkönig (1942) stomach initio trainer aircraft.

After WWII the organization transitioned to smaller machines, notably the "Bella" motor scooter, which was a relatively heavy machine to its type. In 1951 Zündapp released the last of its heavy bike models, but one of its most well-known: the KS601 (this "green elephant") that has a 598 cc two-cylinder engine. From 1957 to 1958 this company also produced the Zündapp Janus microcar. In 1958 the corporation moved from Nuremberg for you to Munich. Subsequently, the company developed many new smaller models, discontinued the development of four-stroke engines in support of produced two-stroke models. Zündapp experienced some achievements in motorsports with biker André Malherbe winning the 125cc European motocross competition in 1973 and again in 1974. Initially, Zündapp scooters and mopeds distributed well, but later sales dropped and in 1984 the company went bankrupt and finished.

As soon as the bankruptcy, the entire production series and intellectual properties had been bought by Xunda Engine Co., Tianjin, China. They produced small Zündapp motorbikes from 1987 till earlier 1990s. Zündapp is still running a business, but makes Honda structured 4-stroke motorcycles and energy mopeds.Zündapp also had any technical collaboration with Regal Enfield (India) to build mopeds and motorcycles. A dedicated factory ended up being built at Ranipet near Chennai inside early 1980s to create small, lightweight two-stroke motorcycles to be offered along with their flagship Royal Enfield Topic. Enfield launched two 50 cc motorcycles first, the step-thru Silver Plus along with the 3-speed Explorer motorcycle. Later, 175 cc Enfield Fury (depending on Zündapp KS175) was introduced as a performance motorcycle.
