Zündapp was a serious German motorcycle manufacturer launched in 1917 in Nuremberg simply by Fritz Neumeyer, together with the Friedrich Krupp AG and the machine tool manufacturer Thiel under the name "Zünder- und Apparatebau Grams. m. b. H. " as a manufacturer of detonators (Zünder- und Apparatebau is usually German for Igniter as well as Apparatus). In 1919, as the demand with regard to weapons parts declined soon after WWI, Neumeyer became the sole proprietor from the company, and two years later he diversified into the construction of motorcycles.Following WWII, Zündapp expanded into this microcar, moped and Scooter (motorbike) markets. The very first Zündapp motorcycle was your model Z22 in 1921. This was the Motorrad für Jedermann ("motorcycle intended for everyone"), a simple, reliable design that was manufactured in large series. Zündapp's history of large motorcycles began in 1933 using the K-series. The "K" refers to the drivetrain that these designs used, Kardanantrieb, meaning enclosed driveshaft along with two universal joints. Zündapp introduced the enclosed crankcase (a novelty). The series encompassed types from 200 to 400 cc displacement and was a serious success, increasing Zündapp's market discuss in Germany from 5% with 1931 to 18% in 1937.The Zündapp KS600, first released in 1938, had a 28 hp (21 kW) width wise opposed twin cylinder powerplant with overhead valves displacing 597 cc (36. 4 cu in). The KS600 was often in conjunction with a Steib sidecar, the BW38 (Beiwagen 1938). The BW38, fitted with the B1 (Boot no. 1) sidecar human body was produced between 1938 as well as 1941 and supplied exclusively towards Wehrmacht. While the KS600 was discontinued and at last replaced by the purpose-built KS750, its motor was being the only remnant to call home beyond the destruction involving war. When Zündapp returned to motorcycle production in the late 1940s, it chose to reuse the KS600's motor to be able to power the KS601 along with few modifications. The Zündapp K800 had unit construction, flat-four engines with shaft drive (a structure adopted by Honda for that Gold Wing in 1974) and were really the only 4-cylinder machines used with the German armed forces with WWII.
By 1931 Ferdinand Porsche as well as Zündapp developed the prototype Automotive für Jedermann ("car regarding everyone"), which was the very first time the name Volkswagen was used. Porsche preferred the 4-cylinder smooth engine, but Zündapp used a new water-cooled 5-cylinder radial motor. In 1932 three prototypes ended up running. All three cars were lost in the war, the last in a new 1945 Stuttgart bombing raid. From 1936 to 1938 Zündapp made the KKS500 model. This was the first Zündapp using a foot gear change, and 170 examples have been built. From 1940 onward Zündapp produced in excess of 18, 000 units of this Zündapp KS 750. This is a sidecar outfit using a driven side wheel plus a locking differential, supplied to the A language like german Wehrmacht.Zündapp also made aircraft engines like the 9-092, which was used in light aircraft, including the Brunswick LF-1 Zaunkönig (1942) stomach initio trainer aircraft.

After WWII the business transitioned to smaller models, notably the "Bella" powerplant scooter, which was a relatively heavy machine because of its type. In 1951 Zündapp released a final of its heavy street motorcycle models, but one of its most famous: the KS601 (the actual "green elephant") with a 598 cc two-cylinder engine. From 1957 to 1958 the company also produced the Zündapp Janus microcar. In 1958 the business moved from Nuremberg to Munich. Subsequently, the company developed various new smaller models, discontinued the development of four-stroke engines and only produced two-stroke models. Zündapp experienced some achievements in motorsports with rider André Malherbe winning this 125cc European motocross titles in 1973 and again in 1974. Initially, Zündapp scooters and mopeds marketed well, but later sales dropped and in 1984 this company went bankrupt and closed.

As soon as the bankruptcy, the entire production range and intellectual properties seemed to be bought by Xunda Engine Co., Tianjin, China. They produced small Zündapp bikes from 1987 till earlier 1990s. Zündapp is still operational, but makes Honda centered 4-stroke motorcycles and electric mopeds.Zündapp also had some sort of technical collaboration with Regal Enfield (India) to develop mopeds and motorcycles. A dedicated factory seemed to be built at Ranipet near Chennai within the early 1980s to produce small, lightweight two-stroke motorcycles to be offered along with their flagship Royal Enfield Topic. Enfield launched two 50 cc motorcycles first, the step-thru Silver Plus along with the 3-speed Explorer motorcycle. Later, 175 cc Enfield Fury (according to Zündapp KS175) was introduced as being a performance motorcycle. It had 5-speed gearbox, a hydraulic Brembo disc brake along with a sleeveless hard chromed storage container barrel, all were a first using a motorcycle in that state.
