The initial Zündapp motorcycle was the model Z22 in 1921. This was the Motorrad für Jedermann ("motorcycle pertaining to everyone"), a simple, reliable design that was manufactured in large series. Zündapp's history of large motorcycles began in 1933 while using K-series. The "K" refers to the drivetrain that these products used, Kardanantrieb, meaning enclosed driveshaft using two universal joints. Zündapp introduced the enclosed crankcase (a novelty). The series encompassed versions from 200 to 800 cc displacement and was a serious success, increasing Zündapp's market talk about in Germany from 5% within 1931 to 18% in 1937.The Zündapp KS600, first released in 1938, had a 28 hp . p . (21 kW) horizontally opposed twin cylinder electric motor with overhead valves displacing 597 closed circuit (36. 4 cu in). The KS600 was often as well as a Steib sidecar, the BW38 (Beiwagen 1938). The BW38, fitted with the B1 (Footwear no. 1) sidecar body was produced between 1938 as well as 1941 and supplied exclusively towards the Wehrmacht. While the KS600 was discontinued and eventually replaced by the purpose-built KS750, its motor was being the only remnant to live on beyond the destruction connected with war. When Zündapp returned to motorcycle production inside late 1940s, it chose to recycling the KS600's motor to be able to power the KS601 together with few modifications. The Zündapp K800 received unit construction, flat-four engines with canal drive (a format adopted by Honda with the Gold Wing in 1974) and were the sole 4-cylinder machines used because of the German armed forces within WWII.

Coming from 1931 Ferdinand Porsche and Zündapp developed the prototype Car für Jedermann ("car for everyone"), which was the first time the name Volkswagen seemed to be used. Porsche preferred the 4-cylinder flat engine, but Zündapp used any water-cooled 5-cylinder radial engine. In 1932 three prototypes have been running. All three cars were lost throughout the war, the last in a 1945 Stuttgart bombing raid. From 1936 to 1938 Zündapp made the KKS500 model. This was the first Zündapp having a foot gear change, and 170 examples have been built. From 1940 onward Zündapp produced a lot more than 18, 000 units of the actual Zündapp KS 750. This is a sidecar outfit using a driven side wheel along with a locking differential, supplied to the German Wehrmacht.Zündapp also made aircraft engines including the 9-092, which was used with light aircraft, including the Brunswick LF-1 Zaunkönig (1942) stomach initio trainer aircraft.

After WWII the business transitioned to smaller machines, notably the "Bella" engine scooter, which was a relatively heavy machine because of its type. In 1951 Zündapp released the last of its heavy motorbike models, but one of its most famous: the KS601 (this "green elephant") that has a 598 cc two-cylinder serps. From 1957 to 1958 the company also produced the Zündapp Janus microcar. In 1958 the business moved from Nuremberg in order to Munich. Subsequently, the company developed various new smaller models, discontinued the development of four-stroke engines in support of produced two-stroke models. Zündapp experienced some accomplishment in motorsports with driver André Malherbe winning the 125cc European motocross competition in 1973 and yet again in 1974. Initially, Zündapp scooters and mopeds offered well, but later sales rejected and in 1984 the company went bankrupt and shut down.

Following bankruptcy, the entire production collection and intellectual properties was bought by Xunda Powerplant Co., Tianjin, China. They produced small Zündapp bicycles from 1987 till earlier 1990s. Zündapp is still operational, but makes Honda centered 4-stroke motorcycles and power mopeds.Zündapp also had the technical collaboration with Noble Enfield (India) to make mopeds and motorcycles. A dedicated factory had been built at Ranipet near Chennai inside early 1980s to produce small, lightweight two-stroke motorcycles to be offered along with their flagship Royal Enfield Bullet. Enfield launched two 50 closed circuit motorcycles first, the step-thru Silver Plus and also the 3-speed Explorer motorcycle. Later, 175 cc Enfield Fury (according to Zündapp KS175) was introduced to be a performance motorcycle. It had 5-speed gearbox, a hydraulic Brembo disc brake as well as a sleeveless hard chromed cyndrical tube barrel, all were a first on the motorcycle in that country.
