Zündapp was a major German motorcycle manufacturer created in 1917 in Nuremberg by Fritz Neumeyer, together with the Friedrich Krupp AG along with the machine tool manufacturer Thiel under the name "Zünder- und Apparatebau G. m. b. H. " as a manufacturer of detonators (Zünder- und Apparatebau is usually German for Igniter along with Apparatus). In 1919, as the demand with regard to weapons parts declined after WWI, Neumeyer became the sole proprietor on the company, and two years later he diversified in the construction of motorcycles.Following WWII, Zündapp expanded into the actual microcar, moped and Scooter (street bike) markets. The 1st Zündapp motorcycle was this model Z22 in 1921. This was the Motorrad für Jedermann ("motorcycle with regard to everyone"), a simple, reliable design that was stated in large series. Zündapp's history of hefty motorcycles began in 1933 using the K-series. The "K" refers to any type of drivetrain that these versions used, Kardanantrieb, meaning enclosed driveshaft along with two universal joints. Zündapp introduced the enclosed crankcase (then a novelty). This was the first Zündapp which has a foot gear change, and 170 examples had been built. From 1940 onward Zündapp produced greater than 18, 000 units of this Zündapp KS 750. This is a sidecar outfit having a driven side wheel as well as a locking differential, supplied to the German born Wehrmacht.Zündapp also made aircraft engines like the 9-092, which was used inside light aircraft, including the Brunswick LF-1 Zaunkönig (1942) belly initio trainer aircraft.

After WWII the company transitioned to smaller products, notably the "Bella" powerplant scooter, which was a relatively heavy machine to its type. In 1951 Zündapp released a final of its heavy motorbike models, but one of its most well-known: the KS601 (the particular "green elephant") which has a 598 cc two-cylinder motor. After the bankruptcy, the entire production series and intellectual properties has been bought by Xunda Generator Co., Tianjin, China. They produced small Zündapp motorcycles from 1987 till their early 1990s. Zündapp is still in operation, but makes Honda dependent 4-stroke motorcycles and energy mopeds.Zündapp also had any technical collaboration with Royal Enfield (India) to construct mopeds and motorcycles. A dedicated factory has been built at Ranipet near Chennai inside the early 1980s to production small, lightweight two-stroke motorcycles to be offered along with their flagship Royal Enfield Round. Enfield launched two 50 closed circuit motorcycles first, the step-thru Silver Plus and also the 3-speed Explorer motorcycle. Later, 175 cc Enfield Fury (dependant on Zündapp KS175) was introduced as being a performance motorcycle. It had 5-speed gearbox, a hydraulic Brembo disc brake and also a sleeveless hard chromed storage container barrel, all were a first with a motorcycle in that country.
