Zündapp was an important German motorcycle manufacturer founded in 1917 in Nuremberg by Fritz Neumeyer, together with the Friedrich Krupp AG and the machine tool manufacturer Thiel underneath the name "Zünder- und Apparatebau Gary the gadget guy. m. b. H. " as a producer of detonators (Zünder- und Apparatebau is German for Igniter along with Apparatus). In 1919, as the demand for weapons parts declined soon after WWI, Neumeyer became the sole proprietor from the company, and two years later he diversified into the construction of motorcycles.Following WWII, Zündapp expanded into the actual microcar, moped and Scooter (street bike) markets. The primary Zündapp motorcycle was the particular model Z22 in 1921. When Zündapp returned to motorcycle production inside late 1940s, it chose to recycle the KS600's motor in order to power the KS601 with few modifications.The Zündapp K800 acquired unit construction, flat-four engines with the whole length drive (a format adopted by Honda for the Gold Wing in 1974) and were the one 4-cylinder machines used by the German armed forces inside WWII.

After WWII the company transitioned to smaller equipment, notably the "Bella" motor scooter, which was a relatively heavy machine to its type. In 1951 Zündapp released the past of its heavy street motorcycle models, but one of its most well-known: the KS601 (the actual "green elephant") which has a 598 cc two-cylinder powerplant. From 1957 to 1958 the company also produced the Zündapp Janus microcar.In 1958 the firm moved from Nuremberg to Munich. Subsequently, the company developed many new smaller models, discontinued the development of four-stroke engines and only produced two-stroke models. Zündapp experienced some achievement in motorsports with driver André Malherbe winning this 125cc European motocross competition in 1973 and all over again in 1974. Initially, Zündapp scooters and mopeds offered well, but later sales dropped and in 1984 this company went bankrupt and closed.

Following bankruptcy, the entire production series and intellectual properties seemed to be bought by Xunda Generator Co., Tianjin, China. They produced small Zündapp motorcycles from 1987 till the early 1990s. Zündapp is still running a business, but makes Honda based 4-stroke motorcycles and electrical mopeds.Zündapp also had a new technical collaboration with Regal Enfield (India) to construct mopeds and motorcycles. A dedicated factory was built at Ranipet near Chennai inside early 1980s to production small, lightweight two-stroke motorcycles to be offered along with their flagship Royal Enfield Topic. Enfield launched two 50 cc motorcycles first, the step-thru Silver Plus as well as the 3-speed Explorer motorcycle. Later, 175 cc Enfield Fury (depending on Zündapp KS175) was introduced like a performance motorcycle. It had 5-speed gearbox, a hydraulic Brembo disc brake plus a sleeveless hard chromed tube barrel, all were a first over a motorcycle in that land.
