Zündapp was an essential German motorcycle manufacturer launched in 1917 in Nuremberg simply by Fritz Neumeyer, together with the Friedrich Krupp AG and the machine tool manufacturer Thiel beneath the name "Zünder- und Apparatebau Gary. m. b. H. " as a producer of detonators (Zünder- und Apparatebau can be German for Igniter and also Apparatus). In 1919, as the demand pertaining to weapons parts declined following WWI, Neumeyer became the sole proprietor in the company, and two years later he diversified in to the construction of motorcycles.Following WWII, Zündapp expanded into the actual microcar, moped and Scooter (street motorcycle) markets. 1957 ZUNDAPP 250 SUPER SABRE
The primary Zündapp motorcycle was this model Z22 in 1921. This was the Motorrad für Jedermann ("motorcycle for everyone"), a simple, reliable design that was manufactured in large series. Zündapp's history of hefty motorcycles began in 1933 with all the K-series. The "K" refers to any type of drivetrain that these products used, Kardanantrieb, meaning enclosed driveshaft with two universal joints. Zündapp introduced the enclosed crankcase (then the novelty). The series encompassed versions from 200 to eight hundred cc displacement and was a significant success, increasing Zündapp's market talk about in Germany from 5% with 1931 to 18% within 1937.The Zündapp KS600, first released in 1938, had a 28 hp . p . (21 kW) width wise opposed twin cylinder generator with overhead valves displacing 597 cc (36. 4 cu in). The KS600 was often coupled with a Steib sidecar, the BW38 (Beiwagen 1938). The BW38, fitted with the B1 (Shoe no. 1) sidecar entire body was produced between 1938 as well as 1941 and supplied exclusively towards Wehrmacht. While the KS600 was discontinued and in the end replaced by the purpose-built KS750, its motor was to be the only remnant to reside beyond the destruction associated with war. When Zündapp returned to motorcycle production in the late 1940s, it chose to reuse the KS600's motor for you to power the KS601 having few modifications.The Zündapp K800 had unit construction, flat-four engines with canal drive (a design adopted by Honda for that Gold Wing in 1974) and were the only real 4-cylinder machines used through the German armed forces throughout WWII.

Coming from 1931 Ferdinand Porsche along with Zündapp developed the prototype Vehicle für Jedermann ("car intended for everyone"), which was the first-time the name Volkswagen was used. Porsche preferred the 4-cylinder smooth engine, but Zündapp used some sort of water-cooled 5-cylinder radial motor. In 1932 three prototypes were being running. All three cars were lost throughout the war, the last in any 1945 Stuttgart bombing raid.From 1936 to 1938 Zündapp created the KKS500 model. This was the first Zündapp having a foot gear change, and 170 examples were built. From 1940 onward Zündapp produced in excess of 18, 000 units of this Zündapp KS 750. This is a sidecar outfit with a driven side wheel and also a locking differential, supplied to the German born Wehrmacht.Zündapp also made aircraft engines including the 9-092, which was used inside light aircraft, including the Brunswick LF-1 Zaunkönig (1942) abs initio trainer aircraft.

After WWII this company transitioned to smaller models, notably the "Bella" powerplant scooter, which was a relatively heavy machine for the type. In 1951 Zündapp released the last of its heavy street bike models, but one of its most famous: the KS601 (this "green elephant") having a 598 cc two-cylinder serps. From 1957 to 1958 the business also produced the Zündapp Janus microcar.In 1958 the organization moved from Nuremberg in order to Munich. Subsequently, the company developed several new smaller models, discontinued the development of four-stroke engines in support of produced two-stroke models. Zündapp experienced some achievements in motorsports with rider André Malherbe winning the 125cc European motocross competition in 1973 and once again in 1974. Initially, Zündapp scooters and mopeds distributed well, but later sales dropped and in 1984 the business went bankrupt and shut.

As soon as the bankruptcy, the entire production brand and intellectual properties was bought by Xunda Motor Co., Tianjin, China. They produced small Zündapp motorcycles from 1987 till the early 1990s. Zündapp is still in business, but makes Honda structured 4-stroke motorcycles and electric mopeds.Zündapp also had the technical collaboration with Regal Enfield (India) to make mopeds and motorcycles. A dedicated factory had been built at Ranipet near Chennai in the early 1980s to production small, lightweight two-stroke motorcycles to be offered along with their flagship Royal Enfield Topic. Enfield launched two 50 cc motorcycles first, the step-thru Silver Plus as well as the 3-speed Explorer motorcycle. Later, 175 cc Enfield Fury (depending on Zündapp KS175) was introduced as being a performance motorcycle. It had 5-speed gearbox, a hydraulic Brembo disc brake and a sleeveless hard chromed cyndrical tube barrel, all were a first with a motorcycle in that state.
