Zündapp was a serious German motorcycle manufacturer founded in 1917 in Nuremberg through Fritz Neumeyer, together with the Friedrich Krupp AG and the machine tool manufacturer Thiel under the name "Zünder- und Apparatebau Gary the gadget guy. m. b. H. " as a developer of detonators (Zünder- und Apparatebau will be German for Igniter and Apparatus). In 1919, as the demand with regard to weapons parts declined right after WWI, Neumeyer became the sole proprietor on the company, and two years later he diversified to the construction of motorcycles.Following WWII, Zündapp expanded into the actual microcar, moped and Scooter (bike) markets. The first Zündapp motorcycle was the actual model Z22 in 1921. This was the Motorrad für Jedermann ("motorcycle intended for everyone"), a simple, reliable design that was stated in large series. Zündapp's history of major motorcycles began in 1933 while using the K-series. The "K" refers to the drivetrain that these products used, Kardanantrieb, meaning enclosed driveshaft with two universal joints. Zündapp introduced the enclosed crankcase (a novelty). The series encompassed designs from 200 to eight hundred cc displacement and was a major success, increasing Zündapp's market share in Germany from 5% within 1931 to 18% with 1937.The Zündapp KS600, first released in 1938, had a 28 h . p . (21 kW) flat in a trench opposed twin cylinder powerplant with overhead valves displacing 597 closed circuit (36. 4 cu in). The KS600 was often in addition to a Steib sidecar, the BW38 (Beiwagen 1938). The BW38, fitted with the B1 (Start no. 1) sidecar physique was produced between 1938 along with 1941 and supplied exclusively to the Wehrmacht. While the KS600 was discontinued and finally replaced by the purpose-built KS750, its motor was for being the only remnant to live beyond the destruction involving war. When Zündapp returned to motorcycle production in the late 1940s, it chose to recycling the KS600's motor for you to power the KS601 with few modifications.The Zündapp K800 experienced unit construction, flat-four engines with base drive (a structure adopted by Honda for the Gold Wing in 1974) and were the one 4-cylinder machines used from the German armed forces with WWII.

Through 1931 Ferdinand Porsche in addition to Zündapp developed the prototype Automotive für Jedermann ("car with regard to everyone"), which was the very first time the name Volkswagen seemed to be used. Porsche preferred the 4-cylinder toned engine, but Zündapp used some sort of water-cooled 5-cylinder radial serps. In 1932 three prototypes ended up running. All three cars were lost in the war, the last in any 1945 Stuttgart bombing raid.From 1936 to 1938 Zündapp created the KKS500 model. This was the first Zündapp with a foot gear change, and 170 examples have been built. From 1940 onward Zündapp produced over 18, 000 units of the Zündapp KS 750. This is a sidecar outfit which has a driven side wheel as well as a locking differential, supplied to the German Wehrmacht.Zündapp also made aircraft engines like the 9-092, which was used within light aircraft, including the Brunswick LF-1 Zaunkönig (1942) abdominal initio trainer aircraft.
After WWII the organization transitioned to smaller machines, notably the "Bella" generator scooter, which was a relatively heavy machine for its type. In 1951 Zündapp released the past of its heavy bike models, but one of its most well-known: the KS601 (this "green elephant") that has a 598 cc two-cylinder serps. From 1957 to 1958 this company also produced the Zündapp Janus microcar.In 1958 the organization moved from Nuremberg to help Munich. Subsequently, the company developed a number of new smaller models, discontinued the development of four-stroke engines in support of produced two-stroke models. Zündapp experienced some achievement in motorsports with participant André Malherbe winning the actual 125cc European motocross competition in 1973 and all over again in 1974. Initially, Zündapp scooters and mopeds offered well, but later sales declined and in 1984 the corporation went bankrupt and finished.

As soon as the bankruptcy, the entire production line and intellectual properties has been bought by Xunda Motor Co., Tianjin, China. They produced small Zündapp bicycles from 1987 till early 1990s. Zündapp is still operating, but makes Honda dependent 4-stroke motorcycles and electrical mopeds.Zündapp also had a technical collaboration with Noble Enfield (India) to create mopeds and motorcycles. A dedicated factory has been built at Ranipet near Chennai from the early 1980s to production small, lightweight two-stroke motorcycles to be offered along with their flagship Royal Enfield Bullet. Enfield launched two 50 cc motorcycles first, the step-thru Silver Plus plus the 3-speed Explorer motorcycle. Later, 175 cc Enfield Fury (based on Zündapp KS175) was introduced as a performance motorcycle. It had 5-speed gearbox, a hydraulic Brembo disc brake and a sleeveless hard chromed canister barrel, all were a first on the motorcycle in that state.
