Zündapp was a serious German motorcycle manufacturer founded in 1917 in Nuremberg by Fritz Neumeyer, together with the Friedrich Krupp AG and the machine tool manufacturer Thiel under the name "Zünder- und Apparatebau Gary the gadget guy. m. b. H. " as a maker of detonators (Zünder- und Apparatebau is German for Igniter and Apparatus). In 1919, as the demand for weapons parts declined following WWI, Neumeyer became the sole proprietor in the company, and two years later he diversified to the construction of motorcycles.Following WWII, Zündapp expanded into the actual microcar, moped and Scooter (motorbike) markets. The initial Zündapp motorcycle was your model Z22 in 1921. This was the Motorrad für Jedermann ("motorcycle with regard to everyone"), a simple, reliable design that was stated in large series. Zündapp's history of weighty motorcycles began in 1933 while using K-series. The "K" refers to any type of drivetrain that these designs used, Kardanantrieb, meaning enclosed driveshaft together with two universal joints. Zündapp introduced the enclosed crankcase (then a novelty). The series encompassed products from 200 to eight hundred cc displacement and was an essential success, increasing Zündapp's market write about in Germany from 5% in 1931 to 18% inside 1937.The Zündapp KS600, first released in 1938, had a 28 hewlett packard (21 kW) flat in a trench opposed twin cylinder powerplant with overhead valves displacing 597 closed circuit (36. 4 cu in). The KS600 was often in conjunction with a Steib sidecar, the BW38 (Beiwagen 1938). When Zündapp returned to motorcycle production from the late 1940s, it chose to recycling the KS600's motor to power the KS601 having few modifications.The Zündapp K800 received unit construction, flat-four engines with shaft drive (a format adopted by Honda for the Gold Wing in 1974) and were the sole 4-cylinder machines used from the German armed forces within WWII.

Coming from 1931 Ferdinand Porsche in addition to Zündapp developed the prototype Automotive für Jedermann ("car pertaining to everyone"), which was the first time the name Volkswagen seemed to be used. Porsche preferred the 4-cylinder smooth engine, but Zündapp used the water-cooled 5-cylinder radial powerplant. In 1932 three prototypes were running. All three cars were lost during the war, the last in a new 1945 Stuttgart bombing raid.From 1936 to 1938 Zündapp produced the KKS500 model. This was the first Zündapp which has a foot gear change, and 170 examples had been built. From 1940 onward Zündapp produced more than 18, 000 units of this Zündapp KS 750. This is a sidecar outfit having a driven side wheel and a locking differential, supplied to the German Wehrmacht.Zündapp also made aircraft engines like the 9-092, which was used with light aircraft, including the Brunswick LF-1 Zaunkönig (1942) belly initio trainer aircraft.

After WWII this company transitioned to smaller machines, notably the "Bella" generator scooter, which was a relatively heavy machine due to the type. In 1951 Zündapp released the last of its heavy bike models, but one of its most well-known: the KS601 (the actual "green elephant") that has a 598 cc two-cylinder powerplant. From 1957 to 1958 this company also produced the Zündapp Janus microcar.In 1958 the business moved from Nuremberg to help Munich. Subsequently, the company developed numerous new smaller models, discontinued the development of four-stroke engines and only produced two-stroke models. Zündapp experienced some achievement in motorsports with riders André Malherbe winning this 125cc European motocross titles in 1973 and all over again in 1974. Initially, Zündapp scooters and mopeds marketed well, but later sales rejected and in 1984 this company went bankrupt and sealed.

Following your bankruptcy, the entire production collection and intellectual properties has been bought by Xunda Electric motor Co., Tianjin, China. They produced small Zündapp bicycles from 1987 till the early 1990s. Zündapp is still in operation, but makes Honda dependent 4-stroke motorcycles and energy mopeds.Zündapp also had the technical collaboration with Regal Enfield (India) to construct mopeds and motorcycles. A dedicated factory had been built at Ranipet near Chennai from the early 1980s to make small, lightweight two-stroke motorcycles to be offered along with their flagship Royal Enfield Round. Enfield launched two 50 closed circuit motorcycles first, the step-thru Silver Plus along with the 3-speed Explorer motorcycle. Later, 175 cc Enfield Fury (determined by Zündapp KS175) was introduced as being a performance motorcycle. It had 5-speed gearbox, a hydraulic Brembo disc brake plus a sleeveless hard chromed cyndrical tube barrel, all were a first with a motorcycle in that land.
