Zündapp was a significant German motorcycle manufacturer started in 1917 in Nuremberg simply by Fritz Neumeyer, together with the Friedrich Krupp AG along with the machine tool manufacturer Thiel under the name "Zünder- und Apparatebau Gary. m. b. H. " as a manufacturer of detonators (Zünder- und Apparatebau is usually German for Igniter in addition to Apparatus). In 1919, as the demand regarding weapons parts declined immediately after WWI, Neumeyer became the sole proprietor on the company, and two years later he diversified in to the construction of motorcycles.Following WWII, Zündapp expanded into the microcar, moped and Scooter (street bike) markets. The initial Zündapp motorcycle was the model Z22 in 1921. This was the Motorrad für Jedermann ("motorcycle regarding everyone"), a simple, reliable design that was produced in large series. Zündapp's history of major motorcycles began in 1933 with the K-series. The "K" refers to the drivetrain that these designs used, Kardanantrieb, meaning enclosed driveshaft along with two universal joints. Zündapp introduced the enclosed crankcase (then a novelty). The series encompassed models from 200 to 900 cc displacement and was a major success, increasing Zündapp's market talk about in Germany from 5% with 1931 to 18% with 1937.The Zündapp KS600, first released in 1938, had a 28 h . p . (21 kW) flat in a trench opposed twin cylinder engine with overhead valves displacing 597 cc (36. 4 cu in). The KS600 was often as well as a Steib sidecar, the BW38 (Beiwagen 1938). Coming from 1931 Ferdinand Porsche as well as Zündapp developed the prototype Car für Jedermann ("car regarding everyone"), which was the new the name Volkswagen seemed to be used. Porsche preferred the 4-cylinder smooth engine, but Zündapp used some sort of water-cooled 5-cylinder radial motor. In 1932 three prototypes have been running. This was the first Zündapp which has a foot gear change, and 170 examples ended up built. From 1940 onward Zündapp produced in excess of 18, 000 units of the actual Zündapp KS 750. This is a sidecar outfit having a driven side wheel plus a locking differential, supplied to the A language like german Wehrmacht.Zündapp also made aircraft engines such as the 9-092, which was used with light aircraft, including the Brunswick LF-1 Zaunkönig (1942) ab initio trainer aircraft.

After WWII the corporation transitioned to smaller devices, notably the "Bella" generator scooter, which was a relatively heavy machine due to the type. In 1951 Zündapp released one more of its heavy bike models, but one of its most famous: the KS601 (the "green elephant") with a 598 cc two-cylinder serp. From 1957 to 1958 this company also produced the Zündapp Janus microcar.In 1958 the company moved from Nuremberg to help Munich. Subsequently, the company developed many new smaller models, discontinued the development of four-stroke engines in support of produced two-stroke models. Zündapp experienced some accomplishment in motorsports with driver André Malherbe winning the particular 125cc European motocross competition in 1973 and once again in 1974. Initially, Zündapp scooters and mopeds offered well, but later sales diminished and in 1984 the business went bankrupt and closed.

Following bankruptcy, the entire production line and intellectual properties has been bought by Xunda Engine Co., Tianjin, China. They produced small Zündapp cycles from 1987 till their early 1990s. Zündapp is still in business, but makes Honda dependent 4-stroke motorcycles and power mopeds.Zündapp also had the technical collaboration with Royal Enfield (India) to make mopeds and motorcycles. A dedicated factory was built at Ranipet near Chennai in the early 1980s to manufacture small, lightweight two-stroke motorcycles to be offered along with their flagship Royal Enfield Bullet. Enfield launched two 50 closed circuit motorcycles first, the step-thru Silver Plus and the 3-speed Explorer motorcycle. Later, 175 cc Enfield Fury (according to Zündapp KS175) was introduced being a performance motorcycle. It had 5-speed gearbox, a hydraulic Brembo disc brake and a sleeveless hard chromed cyndrical tube barrel, all were a first with a motorcycle in that nation.
