Zündapp was a major German motorcycle manufacturer founded in 1917 in Nuremberg through Fritz Neumeyer, together with the Friedrich Krupp AG and the machine tool manufacturer Thiel beneath name "Zünder- und Apparatebau G. m. b. H. " as a manufacturer of detonators (Zünder- und Apparatebau will be German for Igniter in addition to Apparatus). In 1919, as the demand with regard to weapons parts declined right after WWI, Neumeyer became the sole proprietor from the company, and two years later he diversified in to the construction of motorcycles.Following WWII, Zündapp expanded into the microcar, moped and Scooter (bike) markets. The primary Zündapp motorcycle was the model Z22 in 1921. This was the Motorrad für Jedermann ("motorcycle pertaining to everyone"), a simple, reliable design that was manufactured in large series. Zündapp's history of heavy motorcycles began in 1933 with all the K-series. The "K" refers to the sort of drivetrain that these designs used, Kardanantrieb, meaning enclosed driveshaft together with two universal joints. Zündapp introduced the enclosed crankcase (then a novelty). After WWII the organization transitioned to smaller devices, notably the "Bella" engine scooter, which was a relatively heavy machine due to the type. In 1951 Zündapp released the last of its heavy street bike models, but one of its most well-known: the KS601 (the "green elephant") with a 598 cc two-cylinder powerplant. From 1957 to 1958 the corporation also produced the Zündapp Janus microcar.In 1958 the organization moved from Nuremberg to help Munich. Subsequently, the company developed a number of new smaller models, discontinued the development of four-stroke engines in support of produced two-stroke models. Zündapp experienced some success in motorsports with riders André Malherbe winning your 125cc European motocross championships in 1973 and once again in 1974. Initially, Zündapp scooters and mopeds available well, but later sales dropped and in 1984 the company went bankrupt and finished.

Following the bankruptcy, the entire production brand and intellectual properties has been bought by Xunda Powerplant Co., Tianjin, China. They produced small Zündapp cycles from 1987 till earlier 1990s. Zündapp is still running a business, but makes Honda based 4-stroke motorcycles and power mopeds.Zündapp also had a new technical collaboration with Regal Enfield (India) to build mopeds and motorcycles. A dedicated factory seemed to be built at Ranipet near Chennai in the early 1980s to production small, lightweight two-stroke motorcycles to be offered along with their flagship Royal Enfield Bullet. Enfield launched two 50 cc motorcycles first, the step-thru Silver Plus as well as the 3-speed Explorer motorcycle. Later, 175 cc Enfield Fury (according to Zündapp KS175) was introduced being a performance motorcycle. It had 5-speed gearbox, a hydraulic Brembo disc brake and also a sleeveless hard chromed cylinder barrel, all were a first over a motorcycle in that land.
