Zündapp was a serious German motorcycle manufacturer founded in 1917 in Nuremberg by means of Fritz Neumeyer, together with the Friedrich Krupp AG along with the machine tool manufacturer Thiel beneath the name "Zünder- und Apparatebau G. m. b. The 1st Zündapp motorcycle was the actual model Z22 in 1921. This was the Motorrad für Jedermann ("motorcycle for everyone"), a simple, reliable design that was manufactured in large series. Zündapp's history of major motorcycles began in 1933 with all the K-series. The "K" refers to the kind of drivetrain that these products used, Kardanantrieb, meaning enclosed driveshaft having two universal joints. Zündapp introduced the enclosed crankcase (then a novelty). The series encompassed models from 200 to 800 cc displacement and was a major success, increasing Zündapp's market share in Germany from 5% inside 1931 to 18% throughout 1937.The Zündapp KS600, first released in 1938, had a 28 h . p . (21 kW) flat opposed twin cylinder motor with overhead valves displacing 597 closed circuit (36. 4 cu in). The KS600 was often in conjunction with a Steib sidecar, the BW38 (Beiwagen 1938). The BW38, fitted with the B1 (Boot no. 1) sidecar human body was produced between 1938 and 1941 and supplied exclusively towards Wehrmacht. While the KS600 was discontinued and in the end replaced by the purpose-built KS750, its motor was to be the only remnant to live on beyond the destruction regarding war. When Zündapp returned to motorcycle production in the late 1940s, it chose to reuse the KS600's motor to help power the KS601 using few modifications.The Zündapp K800 received unit construction, flat-four engines with canal drive (a format adopted by Honda to the Gold Wing in 1974) and were the sole 4-cylinder machines used through the German armed forces throughout WWII.

Following the bankruptcy, the entire production line and intellectual properties was bought by Xunda Motor Co., Tianjin, China. They produced small Zündapp bicycles from 1987 till their early 1990s. Zündapp is still operating, but makes Honda structured 4-stroke motorcycles and power mopeds.Zündapp also had a new technical collaboration with Noble Enfield (India) to construct mopeds and motorcycles. A dedicated factory was built at Ranipet near Chennai inside early 1980s to produce small, lightweight two-stroke motorcycles to be offered with their flagship Royal Enfield Topic. Enfield launched two 50 cc motorcycles first, the step-thru Silver Plus plus the 3-speed Explorer motorcycle. Later, 175 cc Enfield Fury (according to Zündapp KS175) was introduced being a performance motorcycle. It had 5-speed gearbox, a hydraulic Brembo disc brake and also a sleeveless hard chromed storage container barrel, all were a first on the motorcycle in that nation.
