The "K" refers to the type of drivetrain that these products used, Kardanantrieb, meaning enclosed driveshaft along with two universal joints. Zündapp introduced the enclosed crankcase (then a novelty). The series encompassed products from 200 to 400 cc displacement and was an essential success, increasing Zündapp's market reveal in Germany from 5% with 1931 to 18% with 1937.The Zündapp KS600, first released in 1938, had a 28 horsepower (21 kW) flat in a trench opposed twin cylinder powerplant with overhead valves displacing 597 closed circuit (36. 4 cu in). The BW38, fitted with the B1 (Shoe no. 1) sidecar physique was produced between 1938 and 1941 and supplied exclusively towards the Wehrmacht. While the KS600 was discontinued and finally replaced by the purpose-built KS750, its motor was for being the only remnant to call home beyond the destruction associated with war. When Zündapp returned to motorcycle production inside late 1940s, it chose to reuse the KS600's motor to be able to power the KS601 having few modifications. The Zündapp K800 received unit construction, flat-four engines with base drive (a layout adopted by Honda to the Gold Wing in 1974) and were the one 4-cylinder machines used through the German armed forces within WWII.

Through 1931 Ferdinand Porsche and also Zündapp developed the prototype Car für Jedermann ("car for everyone"), which was the very first time that the name Volkswagen was used. Porsche preferred the 4-cylinder smooth engine, but Zündapp used a water-cooled 5-cylinder radial serps. In 1932 three prototypes were running. All three cars were lost through the war, the last in the 1945 Stuttgart bombing raid. From 1936 to 1938 Zündapp developed the KKS500 model. This was the first Zündapp having a foot gear change, and 170 examples have been built. From 1940 onward Zündapp produced a lot more than 18, 000 units of the particular Zündapp KS 750.
